Council Meeting

 17 July 2024

Item No: MM07/24-59

Mayoral Minute - Condolences - The Late Robin Douglas Grimley

Author:                                              Mayor Lisa Lake

Summary

It is with sadness that I note the passing of Robin (Rob) Grimley on Sunday 30 June 2024 at the age of 82.

Robin was born in Lakemba on 21 January 1942.  He attended Lakemba Infants and Primary School, and in his final two years he qualified to transfer to Erskineville Primary Selective School.  Robin finished his education at Homebush Boys High School.

A few years later Robin joined the Australian Sea Cadet Corps, later renamed the Naval Reserve Cadets.  In 1961 he was appointed Petty Officer (instructor).  He later served in the position of Staff Officer (administration) at the Cadet Headquarters, and in 1970 was promoted to the rank of sub-Lieutenant and appointed as a Staff Officer (training).  Four years later, he was again promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, a position he held until 1977.

It was during his time in the Naval Reserve Cadets that he met Marie Louise Evans, whom he married in 1964. They settled in Leeton Street, Merrylands West in 1967, where they remained and raised their three children – Wayne, Ian and Kayleen.  Robin and Marie cherished their five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren dearly.

Robin had a love of sport and from 1975 to 1984 he was coach and manager of numerous junior soccer and cricket teams.

In 2006 he joined the Merrylands RSL Sub-Branch as a Committee Member, where he served firstly as their Vice President and then as President for five years.  During his tenure with the sub-branch he dedicated many days volunteering and organising local memorial events. His efforts included installing the Seafarers Anchor in Memorial Park Merrylands, relocating the Wilbert (Darky) Hudson memorial to Charles Mance Reserve Merrylands, and arranging numerous ANZAC and Remembrance Day services.

In addition to this, in 2007 he joined the Naval Association and quickly became the Vice President of the Parramatta subsection.  By the end of 2009 he had become the Naval Association’s Hon. State Secretary, which he proudly held until 2016.  From then he held the title of State Vice President from which he retired in 2022.

Robin took on the role of Merrylands RSL Club President in May 2024, having previously served as Club Director since May 2022.

In 2016 Robin received the Holroyd City Council Joint Citizen of the Year Award, in recognition for his passion in looking after Veterans, his organisation of commemorative services and educating the young about the ANZAC spirit.

Robin Grimley's dedication, kindness and commitment to the community and country will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.

Therefore Councillors, tonight I move the following:

 Recommendation

That Council:

1.      Note with sadness the passing of the late Robin Douglas Grimley; and

2.      Observe a minute’s silence in honour of the life of Robin Grimley and all that he contributed to his community and country.
