Item No: MM03/21-52

Mayoral Minute - World Hearing Day

Author:                                              Mayor Steve Christou

File Number:                                    SC486

Council, I would like to recognise the significance of today being World Hearing Day. To recognise the importance of this day to our community, we have Mr David McQuiggan who is a qualified Auslan interpreter interpreting part of the proceedings of this Council meeting.

World Hearing Day is held on 3 March each year to raise awareness on how to prevent deafness and hearing loss and promote ear and hearing care across the world. World Hearing Day coincides with Hearing Awareness Week in Australia. I note that in Australia, almost 4 million people have some form of hearing loss. This continues to grow as our population ages.

On World Hearing Day, the World Health Organization (WHO) wishes to draw attention to the importance of early identification and intervention for hearing loss. I note that many people in our community live with unidentified hearing loss or suffer from related ear diseases.

Cumberland City Council is committed to being inclusive through various initiatives and support mechanisms such as the provision of hearing loops in various locations, senior and disability support services, disability awareness training for staff, online webchat for community members and promoting of the National Relay Service. Council has also adopted a Disability Inclusion Action Plan and convenes the Access and Safety Committee providing advice and input on the needs and interests of people with a disability in the community.

Therefore Councillors, tonight I am recommending the following:

That Council recognise the significance of World Hearing Day 2021.
