Mayoral Minute - Update on Maintenance of Grave - Arthur Todd Holroyd

Author:                                              Mayor Steve Christou

File Number:                                    SC486

Summary

Council will recall the Matter of Urgency of Councillor Garrard and Deputy Mayor Sarkis resolved on 2 December 2020, with respect to the clean up of the grave of Arthur Todd Holroyd. As shown on screen during the Council meeting, the grave site was dirty, unkempt, and could not be located by the general public as it was covered with overgrown shrubs.

Following the meeting, Council staff promptly approached the Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Land Manager and immediately, some rectification works have promptly been undertaken by the Cemetery at their cost. This includes the clearance of the significantly overgrown vegetation. Tonight, we have some visuals to display to show our community how this important resting place of one of our founders has been cleaned up.

Following tonight’s meeting, the General Manager has advised me that the ongoing upkeep of the grave will cost $165 a year, and Council will formally put this arrangement in place. I would like to again thank Councillor Garrard and Deputy Mayor Sarkis for moving this important Matter of Urgency, and Council staff for promptly taking action.

Recommendation

That Council:

1.      Endorse the Mayoral Minute, noting the action undertaken; and

2.      Commit to the annual upkeep of the site, at a cost of $165 per annum, funded by Council’s maintenance budget.
