Mayoral Minute - Medal of the Order of Australia - Councillor Tom Zreika
Author: Mayor Steve Christou
File Number: SC486
Summary
Over the Australia Day Long Weekend, I woke to the news that Councillor Tom Zreika had been honoured with a greatly deserved OAM – an Order of Australia Medal – for his service to the community and to Local Government.
Tonight, I am pleased to congratulate Tom on behalf of Cumberland City Council and the community on this great achievement. During my time on Council, I have found Councillor Zreika to be an honest, caring man, who has been a pleasure to work with. I recall working closely with Councillor Zreika to deliver Cumberland City Council’s Inaugural Ramadan Event. As a result of Councillor Zreika’s hard work, the event was a huge success and ensured Ramadan celebrations were cemented as an ongoing event with a bigger budget for the Cumberland community.
This Award is a reflection of the countless lives Tom has touched in his capacity as a local Councillor, in his humanitarian aid efforts and also in the legal profession.
Again on behalf of Council, I congratulate you Tom on a fantastic achievement.
That Council congratulate Councillor Tom Zreika on achieving the Medal of the Order of Australia. |

Mayoral Minute - Thank you to Staff - 2019 Mayoral Christmas Dinner
Author: Mayor Steve Christou
File Number: SC486
Summary
On the evening of Friday 20 December 2019 I had the great pleasure of hosting my very first Mayoral Christmas Dinner which was held at Merrylands RSL.
This event provided a wonderful opportunity to bring our community members together and say thank you, for the year that was and the enormous gains made throughout the year.
Over 200 guests attended and were entertained by local comedian Mr Rob Shehadie who was the master of ceremonies and they danced the night away to the music of the Sliver Stars.
What’s more important though, is that this provided another great opportunity to give back, and on this occasion Council was able to donate a truckload of gifts to the Westmead Children’s Hospital, which were so generously provided by those that attended. In addition to this, the evening also supported local dad, Jason Sotiris of Greystanes, the creator of the Super Tee in his quest to transform young patients into superheroes during their hospital stay. A staggering 68 Super Tee shirts were purchased on the night in support of this.
But the night would not have been the success it was without the amazing work of Council staff. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank each and every one of you that contributed to making the evening such an enjoyable one for all of those that attended. Your dedication and professionalism is truly appreciated.
I would also like to thank Merrylands RSL for hosting my first Mayoral Christmas Dinner.
Recommendation That Council thank all the staff that contributed to organising the 2019 Mayoral Christmas Dinner. |

Mayoral Minute - Bushfire Support
Author: Mayor Steve Christou
File Number: SC486
Summary
Over the course of the summer, a state of emergency was declared in New South Wales, with several regions badly hit by raging bushfires. Lives have been lost. Homes, property and wildlife have perished in these bushfires in devastating circumstances.
Our Council area was also not immune to these devastating events. We were hit with a fierce grass fire at Greystanes/Pemulwuy. Thankfully, no lives were lost and no properties were damaged in the Cumberland area.
As Australians, we band together in a disaster, and Cumberland City Council has been doing our bit to help get bushfire-affected communities through this.
As resolved in my Mayoral Minute from the Council meeting held on 20th November 2019, our $15,000 donation to the Salvation Army Disaster Appeal was made.
In late November/December, I attended and cooked at a series of fund raising barbecues held by Council, where we raised $2,320 for the Salvation Army Disaster Appeal. These funds have also been donated.
This issue is important to me and my fellow Councillors, and I would like to propose some further support for our fellow Australians doing it tough at the moment.
Therefore, tonight I propose to double our previous donation, and pledge another $15,000 donation be made towards this cause from Council’s Emergency Relief Fund.
In addition to this, on a local level Council is working with local fire authorities to develop a bushfire mitigation plan.
This will give Council and our firefighters, greater scope to carry out hazard reduction burns and other measures to minimise risk. Council will also be increasing its maintenance and clean-up activities in the area going forward.
Council has also been involved in a Mayoral Forum across a number of Sydney metropolitan Councils, with the primary purpose of providing added support to the bushfire response for our fellow regional Councils.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of our fellow Australians suffering during this difficult time.
Recommendation That Council: 1. Allocate a further $15,000 from the Emergency Relief Fund to the Salvation Army Disaster Appeal to support communities affected by the devastating bushfires in New South Wales. 2. Observe a minutes silence in respect of all the suffering and lives lost as a result of the devastating bushfires. |
