Mayoral Minute - NSW Local Government Excellence Awards

Summary

On Thursday, 20 June 2019 the NSW Local Government Excellence Awards dinner was held at The Westin Hotel Sydney. The awards dinner was the biggest to date, with over 600 local government professionals in attendance to celebrate the exceptional achievements of local government across NSW.

I am very pleased to announce that in 2019 Cumberland Council was a finalist in the following four categories:

·    Asset Management and Infrastructure Initiatives for the project titled ‘Asset Data Harmonisation and Mapping’;

·    Community Partnerships and Collaboration for the project titled ‘Women in Sport Roadshow’;

·    Excellence in People and Culture for the project titled ‘Salary Harmonisation’; and

·    Special Project Initiative for the project titled ‘Book-a-Court’.

It gives me great pleasure to advise that Council was announced as the winner for its ‘Book-a-Court’ project.

Furthermore, Council received a highly commended award for its project ‘Women in Sport Roadshow’.

In addition, earlier this year Cumberland sent a team of six officers to participate in the Australasian Management Challenge.  This challenge is a simulation-based team building, learning and networking program using real local government themes. The teams are challenged to respond to a series of tasks in a unique one-day, fast paced, “pressure cooker” environment.  The officers who participated were from each of the directorates of Council and did an amazing job representing Council.  It was also the first time that Council has sent a team to participate in the challenge.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognise and congratulate all staff who have contributed to these projects and those that participated in the Australasian Management Challenge.

Recommendation

That Council congratulate all staff that contributed to the projects submitted in the NSW Local Government Excellence Awards and those that participated in Australasian Management Challenge in 2019.

Mayoral Minute - Healthy Kids Pitch Winners 2019

Summary

According to NSW Government data only 26 per cent of children in NSW are active enough each day and only five per cent eat enough vegetables.

In Cumberland, nearly a quarter of our residents attend primary or high school and we want all children and young people in Cumberland to be as healthy and active as possible, so they grow and develop to their full potential.

Earlier this year, every school in Cumberland was invited to pitch a Healthy Kids project idea to Council for a chance to win $5,000 to implement their idea within their school.

Schools were given the opportunity to create their own video and pitch an idea for a project that promotes healthy lifestyles for their school community.

A total of 15 submissions were received showcasing a variety of initiatives, which ranged from improving school kitchens to building larger community garden patches to promote healthy living.

I am pleased to announce that the winners of the 2019 Cumberland Healthy Kids Pitch are:

·    Auburn Girls High School

·    Cerdon College, Merrylands

·    Granville Public School

·    Guildford West Public School

Over the past few weeks, I have had the pleasure of visiting each of the four winning schools to award them with their prize of $5,000 to support the implementation of their idea.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the winning schools and thank all of the schools that participated in this initiative.

Recommendation

That Council note and congratulate the winning schools of the 2019 Healthy Kids Pitch.
