Mayoral Minute - Queen's Birthday 2019 Honours List
Author: Mayor Greg Cummings
File Number: SC486
Summary
The 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honour, was bestowed upon two of our own local community members:
· The Honourable Laurie Donald Ferguson, for service to parliament, politics and the community; and
· Mr Ralph Edward Heness, for service to the community of Auburn.
Mr Ferguson was elected to the New South Wales Parliament as the Member for Granville from 1984 until 1990. He was then elected to Federal Parliament in 1990 as the Member for Reid, being re-elected in 1993, 1996, 1998, 2001 and 2004 and later served as the Member for Werriwa.
Mr Ferguson has worked tirelessly on immigration and multicultural issues for the community and assisted many constituents by attending community events, visiting schools and welcoming community members to have an appointment directly with him to discuss their concerns.
Mr Ferguson has served on many local committees and continues to support countless local organisations and community activities. His work with new migrant families and refugees has not only led to positive outcomes for those affected, but has also strengthened our culturally diverse community in Cumberland.
Mr Heness was a resident of Auburn for many years and was a valued and very active member of the community. Mr Heness has been a volunteer with the Auburn-Lidcombe Lions Club since 1961 and a life club member of the Regents Park Cricket Club where he was an A-Grade cricketer for 33 years. During his time with the Auburn-Lidcombe Lions Club he worked on many projects to assist the community, including the Freedom Across Australia project, which provides rehabilitation opportunities for children with a disability.
Mr Heness also served as a member of the Auburn Community Pride Taskforce and worked hard to minimise dumped rubbish in the Auburn area. He also delivered Community News on Flame FM and was the Chairman or the radio station.
Both Mr Ferguson and Mr Heness have received an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the General Division of the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours List. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them both for the wonderful work they have undertaken in the Cumberland community over many decades.
That a letter be sent to the Honourable Laurie Donald Ferguson and Mr Ralph Edward Heness, congratulating them on being recipients of an Order of Australia Medal in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours List. |
