20 March 2019
Item No: MM03/19-3
Mayoral Minute - Attack on Christchurch
Author: Mayor Greg Cummings
File Number: SUB565
Summary
This evening I extend my condolences to the people of New Zealand, those who have died, those who are suffering and the families that are grieving. Like many people all around the world, I denounce the hatred and violence that occurred on 15 March 2019 in Christchurch.
I stand with the people of New Zealand who, like their brothers and sisters in Cumberland, cherish, value and love our cultural diversity and the tolerance and respect we have for each other.
I stand this evening with all the people of the Islamic faith, here in Cumberland, in New Zealand, and all over the world – and I say, you are in our thoughts, we stand with you.
Many people of the Islamic faith have chosen to make Cumberland their home, as have many people of other faiths and cultures. We are all one community. We will continue to support each other and we will continue to prosper in peace as a strong multicultural community.
We in Cumberland, like New Zealand, embrace all the people of the world.
That embrace will never be weakened.
In moving this Mayoral Minute, I request that all present stand for one minute silence following any comments my fellow Councillors may wish to make and prayers from our religious leaders here tonight.
That Council write to the Prime Minister of New Zealand to extend its condolences. |
